So I have set up a new Twitter account called @InhibitingSigns. I’ll be tweeting images that I’ve taken of signs that inhibit behaviour – any sign which tells people not to do something, not to act, not to go somewhere. It’s something that I thought would be fun, but I also think that it’s revealing of how frequently behaviour is controlled – very often in ways that we’ve become conditioned to responding to. Of course, many of these signs are up for good reasons – safety, for managing traffic/pedestrian flows. Some of the signs will be justified; some will not. Some of the signs will be mundane; hopefully others will raise a smile. Hopefully in combination they’ll all tell us something about how public life is governed and controlled – though centrally, I’m just hoping that I enjoy it!
